I Just Turned Pro… On Talk Tennis

From what I can tell, the most active tennis bulletin board is Tennis Warehouse’s “Talk Tennis”.  I joined this online community in Spring of 2008, and I have spent a great deal of time since then reading and posting (more reading than posting).  I’ve learned an incredible amount of information from this board, made a few online friends, and even found my my SAM Pro-Master stringing machine in the “For Sale” forum.  (My machine is no longer made by SAM.  Instead, it is made by XtremeSportsMachines, but you can check out the newest version of my machine here.  Mine is about two years old, and I’ll provide pics in a future post.)  Anyway…

When you first join Talk Tennis, you are labeled with a status of “New User”.  When you reach a post count of 100, you become a “Rookie”, and so on.  The hierarchy of Talk Tennis statuses are as follows:

  • 0 to 99 posts – New User
  • 100 to 399 posts – Rookie
  • 400 to 799 posts – Semi-Pro
  • 800 to 1,499 posts – Professional
  • 1,500 to 4,999 posts – Hall of Fame
  • 5,000 to 9,999 posts – Legend
  • 10,000 and above posts – G.O.A.T.

There is also one other status of “Talk Tennis Guru”.  Currently, only one person has this status, and he, as of this writing, has 24,754 posts.  So, I am not sure if this status is reserved for the single member with the greatest number of posts, or anyone with 20,000 or more posts.  Probably the latter.

Back to the title of this post…  I proudly entered my 800th post today and was thus upgraded from “Semi-Pro” to “Professional”.  This is a big day for me.  I bragged to my wife and kids, I called my parents, and I even toasted myself with a bottle of Evian.  (Well, actually it was tap water that I put in an empty Evian bottle.)  Always one to focus on continuous improvement, I am already setting my sights on the coveted status of “Hall of Fame”.  Only 700 posts to go.

I do, however, have one problem with the Talk Tennis status levels.  The second highest status level is “G.O.A.T.” which, as you probably know, is an acronym that stands for “Greatest Of All Time”.  Currently, there are twelve members with “G.O.A.T.” status.  The problem?  The word greatest implies one, uno, singular.  There can only be one “greatest” of anything – not twelve.  In my opinion, Talk Tennis should use “Talk Tennis Guru” instead of “G.O.A.T.” because there can be multiple gurus, right?  Then, they can reserve the status of “G.O.A.T.” for the one member who has the greatest number of posts.

For fun, I’ll see if I can plead my case to the powers that be at Talk Tennis and get this utterly ridiculous (heavy sarcasm) status system changed.  I’ll report back.

Thanks for checking in. – DH
