hey, I’d like to win a free set of string!
Hello David,
Thanks a bunch for your efforts. The information you provide is relevant and timely as I’m currently searching for a cross string to standardize on. I’m a senior 4.0-4.5 player from New England who has spent the last several months trying to find a cross string to complement the Lux ALU Pwr Rough I use for mains. I use gut now (via Wilson Champion’s Choice) but I’m looking for a less costly and more durable alternative.
Please enter me into your drawing, thanks!

Hey Tom. The major gut brands (Babolat, PACIFIC, and Klip) all offer “second tier” gut that is less costly – assuming you like the feel and playability of gut as a cross. For example, Babolat’s premium gut is VS. Their second tier gut is Tonic. Second tier gut, while less costly, won’t be any more durable.
Another less costly option would be to try a multifilament synthetic gut. My two favorites are Babolat Xcel Power and Tecnifibre X-One BiPhase. About $20 and $16 per set respectively. There are even less expensive multis like Babolat Addiction and Wilson Sensation – about $11 per set. Again… These will be less costly but not necessarily more durable.
Lastly, you could try a monofilament synthetic gut like Prince Synthetic Gut with DuraFlex. It is very inexpensive (about $5 per set) and will be more durable than gut or a multi. While it is a great string for its price, it won’t have the power and touch/feel of gut or a multi.
There are always trade-offs when it comes to strings. 🙂
Take care.
