String List from 2012 BMW Open

Thanks to my friend, Michael Wolz from Racket One Tennis Service in Germany, I’ve obtained a string list from the 2012 (and 2011) BMW Open.  Michael is friends with the Chief Stringer for this tournament and was able to obtain access into the stringing room of this year’s tournament and take the pictures you’ll see below.

Often people speculate on what strings and tensions touring pros use.  Well…  There is no guessing here.  You can clearly see the strings and tensions of many of the pros competing at the BMW Open.  Enjoy!

Thanks again for providing this great information, Michael – much appreciated.

So we all know that less tension = more power, more tension = more control, but what’s the relative difference between a racquet strung with tighter mains than crosses, versus one with tighter crosses than mains?

  4. David Henry says:

Dave – I am not sure I am smart enough to answer that one. While it doesn’t hold true for all of the pros on that list, several of them string the co-poly (whether it is in mains or crosses) lower than natural gut or multi. This makes sense and is very common. Since co-poly is stiffer, more harsh, and less powerful, it is often strung at a lower tension in a hybrid string job than gut or multi.

There is another stringer from the UK, Colin the Stringer, and he has a section on his site about what strings the pros use. http://www.colinthestringer.com/pros-strings/ This is what I read on his site… Tecnifibre Pro RedCode 62lbs I have no clue how accurate this information is.

    Thanks.

thanks for sharing, interesting to see how the main and cross generally have a 2-3 kg variance.

  10. David Henry says:

I don’t know if I should refer to you as “r”, “john”, or “robert”. 🙂 Anyway… To answer your question… Yes, you can win again. I have had people win multiple times. I don’t have any “rules” about that. Once I announce the next contest, please feel free to enter again. Take care.

Thanks! This list is so cool and so helpful, especially for me trying to coach, and string player’s racquets also; I feel so good when I can match every bit of equipment (racquet, grip size, string, tension) to their game. And it’s especially cool knowing I’m not crazy with some of my pro style ideas, because I wasn’t sure what the pros were doing, I was just trying to personalize and figure it out as I go out here!

  12. David Henry says:

Hey Darrick – I’m glad you found this list helpful and interesting. It seems like you are doing a great job of racquet customization for your players – keep up the good work!
